These people care about cats.
A small story to illustrate -
I just returned to the shelter visit this week and bring some donations. My wife and I had adpoted a cat from Cat Guradians in 1996 (its now 2007) and when I mentioned this to the volunteer there, she sincerely wnated to know how JJ was, how his life is with us (and vice versa) and made sure to note down JJ's name so that she could look up the record and pass it on to the group to see if any volunteers were still there who would remember JJ to let them know that all was still OK.
These people work hard, they love their cats, are careful about adoptions and sincerely want the adoption to work ou well for both family and feline.
