Patuxent Animal Welfare Society, Inc. (PAWS)

We are advocates for humane education and the promotion of spay/neuter. The pets come to us from many sources: last-minute shelter rescues, strays, and from people who were no longer able to keep their pets for various reasons.

Cats R Us

Our main focus is TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return). Our shelter in Arnold, Maryland is our "TNR" shelter. TNR is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors, in cities, towns and rural areas are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, sterilized, and eartipped for identification by veterinarians. We DO NOT take feral cats as we have no facility to house them. We DO NOT take giveaways but can direct you to another organization that might take your cat. Another option we can provide is help in adopting your cat by your (and your cats) attendance at our adoption shows.

Last Chance Animal Rescue

We rescue all of our dogs and cats from several different kill-shelters. All of these dogs and cats would have been euthanized if we had not rescued them. We spay and neuter, test for heartworms and treat if needed, deflea, deworm and update shots for all those that we adopt out!

Lucky Cat Rescue Inc.

Lucky Cat Rescue is an organization dedicated and committed to promoting pet spay and neuter. We provide information to educate individuals and communities of the importance of responsible pet ownership. This organization concentrates on spaying and neutering feral cat colonies which have caretakers and are in a safe environment. This practice reduces the risk of unwanted litters. We help in the rescue of stray and feral kittens which require socialization and need to be adopted. All cats and kittens are examined and treated by a veterinarian. Potential adopters will have access to veterinarian care. This shelter provides hope for cats and kittens that are considered ""unadoptable"" and would be euthanized by other shelters.

Cat Rescue of Maryland Inc.

Our primary mission is working with feral (wild) cat colonies that have committed caretakers. All the cats are trapped, tested for FELV and FIV, vaccinated and altered. Kittens and strays are placed in carefully screened adoptive homes (they wait at our vet or in foster homes until they are placed). Feral adults are returned to the colony. Once the colony is "finished", the caretaker's role becomes supplying food, water and shelter and picking up any stray that might wander by in search of a handout. Many of the caretakers then become volunteers to help in our fund raising efforts so we can help other colonies! Our accomplishments with respect to the kittens and strays that are placed in adoptive homes is fairly obvious. But what about the adult ferals? Originally, I thought of the goal of the neuter and release process as being primarily to prevent kittens from being born to suffer. But I have come to realize we accomplish a lot for the adult ferals as well. Freed from constant pregnancy, the female ferals plump up and start to look happy and healthy the way nature intended. Males also start to look much healthier and their roaming is greatly reduced - reducing the opportunities for the spread of disease and the possibility of being hit by a car. It is not a purrfect answer - we all wish they could have homes - but in today's world that just isn't realistic.
