Animal Awareness SocietyThe Animal Awareness Society (TAAS) is dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted and feral cats in the area through spaying and neutering. We go door to door speaking to people and passing out fliers in an attempt to educate the citizens of the Triad about local animal laws, animal care, the benefits of spaying and neutering and the problems that arise from not spaying and neutering. The main goal of the Society is to greatly reduce the number of unwanted cats, find homes for adoptable cats, and find caretakers for feral colonies after they have been spayed or neutered. City of Rocky Mount Animal ControlThe answer is a combination of personnel and city supervision. The Rocky Mount Animal Shelter is a division of the Police Department but the Animal Control/Shelter personnel are civilian. Our policy is to hold dogs and cats for seven days when picked up stray or at large instead of the three days required by state law. We also do not have a set time or day of week for euthanization. We pride ourselves on the fact that we only put down when we have to. Unfortunately however it is still way to often. We receive full support from our supervisors as long as we remain fiscally responsible.1101 N. Person County Animal ControlThe Department of Animal Control operates under North Carolina State Laws and the Local Government Ordinance. We investigate dog bites, quarantine animals if required or have them sent to the state laboratory for testing. We control rabies by giving out rabies verification cards and verifying rabies inoculations, and by controlling the stray animal population. Our department also investigates animal cruelty cases and pursues them in court if necessary. Officers handle sick and distressed animals. Our department controls animal overpopulation and strays are picked up and taken to our shelter. They are provided with food, water and warm shelter. Most of the animals in our shelter have never had food on a daily basis, nor the love and attention, they deserve. Our department has a high rate of adoptions and we also reunite lost pets with their owners.
