Humane Society of WilkesThe Humane Society of Wilkes is a volunteer organization. We are dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, and the education of the public regarding humane treatment of animals. We support these goals through our member dues, tax-deductible donations, and fund-raising projects such as our annual Best Friends Calendar and booths at the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. With these funds we have been able to: place billboards around the county encouraging spaying and neutering of pets, provide Kind News subscriptions to all kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms in Wilkes County, and work closely with Wilkes County Animal Control to place pets from their shelter into appropriate homes. Island Cat AlliesISLAND CAT ALLIES is a local non-profit group servicing Emerald Isle, NC and the surrounding areas. Our main objective is to increase the welfare of local feral cats through TNR (trap-neuter-release) programs. UPDATE ON NUMBERS!!!!! To date, we have spayed/neutered and vaccinated over 235 feral cats thus improving their quality of life and diminishing wild cat populations. The cats are identifiable by having their left ear tipped. All populations are monitored and always are provided with appropriate shelter and food. Occasionally, we run across kittens born to a feral mom, who are easily tamed and we have several adult cats who are super friendly and have apparently become lost or abandoned.
