The GCFA is a Non-Profit organization with both a Ferret Shelter & Club.
We are the Oldest and Largest Ferret Association in the Greater Chicago Area!
In trying to come up with a mission statement that would reflect what G.C.F.A. is all about, and how the volunteer's that help us feel about what they do. I chose this short story that was written by someone who wishes to remain anonymous.
An old man was walking along a beach after a particularly high and violent tide had receded, leaving thousands of starfish stranded above the waterline to die. Ahead of him he saw a youth, bending down and then standing to fling something into the waves. Coming closer, he saw the youth was tossing starfish back into the ocean where they had a chance.
"Why bother?" the old man told the youth. "There are thousands here. You can't toss them all back before they die. You can't even toss a small fraction of them back in time. What you're doing doesn't matter."
The youth pondered that a moment, looking at the starfish he held in his hand. "It matters to this one," he replied, and threw it back into the water.
This is all that anyone can ask and/or do. If you can, help us save one more!!!

Halfway Home Rescue Inc is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the rescue of abused, neglected and abandoned animals. We focus primarily on cats, but also work with dogs, ferrets, rodents and birds. Every animal looking for a home is spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, tested negative for Feline AIDS & Leukemia, treated for internal/external parasites and ready for a new home. No animal is ever euthanized for lack of space. Except in cases of terminal illness or extreme behavioral issues, all animals are here until they find forever homes.

Cheryl Routh started Happy Hills in 1982 as a boarding and grooming kennel. (boarding and grooming services are still offered). In 1986, she began taking in abandoned and abused animals, and putting them up for adoption. By 1989 the rescue work had grown so much that Happy Hills Animal Foundation was incorporated as a non-profit organization.
Hundreds of dogs and cats, as well as other animals like potbellied pigs, rabbits, etc. have been rescued and adopted through Happy Hills. We are no-kill, and adoptable animals may stay with us weeks, months, even years before they find their forever home. Unfortunately, it is impossible to take in all the animals that need rescuing, and some are sent on to the county pound.
