Mercer County Animal ShelterThe Mercer County Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization. We are supported entirely by donations and a small fee charged to the towns of Mercer County to pick up and care for unwanted, stray, and abandoned animals. We are a open admission Shelter .That is a county operation . With limit kennel space... We have 6 inside outside runs and 5 extra inside runs in the back for isolation for dogs and 10 available spaces for cats. With that said we hold a wonderful record of not having to euth any adoptable animal that has come through our doors for 2 years now!!! With the hard work of the staff and the many rescues we work with we have also been able to help out other neighboring shelters absorbing some of their animals also. We also have in place a wonderful fostering program. Aid to Animals of Northern IllinoisAid to Animals is a Illinois shelter concerned with finding homes for some of the millions of homeless animals in our country. We take in cats and dogs. In the spring, there are many homeless pregnant cats who we place in foster homes. The kittens are spayed or neutered and then placed for adoption. The mama cats are spayed and also placed for adoption. Many times we also rescue dogs from shelters and holding facilities when their "time" is up. We try to rescue those sweet, loving animals that might find a home. We are strong advocates that adult dogs and cats can make the best pets for many reasons. Also, most potential adopters want puppies and kittens, however, when they realize the work and destruction involved, many times the kittens and puppies are given up to the shelter. Adults are calmer and learn quickly. They are extremely appreciative of the chance for a new home. Please consider an adult pet instead of a youngster.P. O.
