As a traditional municipal shelter, we accept all strays and owner turn-ins from the City of Huntsville and Madison County. By law we must "house or board" stray pets for three to five days. After the "holding period," a decision regarding the "disposition" of the animal is made. The pet may be made available for adoption, be released to a rescue organization or unfortunately, may be euthanized due to space, temperament, or health reasons. Pet overpopulation forces us to make difficult decisions. Euthanasia is a daily function of our organization. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate the need for euthanasia

Our Animal Shelter was built in August of 1986 and is named in memory of Dr. Rita B. Huff who passed away in 1982. Dr. Huff opened her home and heart to stray and unwanted pets, had them spayed or neutered, innoculated, and found each a loving family of their own.
