Secondhand Shelties Ltd.

Secondhand Shelties, Ltd. is a not-for-profit Chicagoland area breed rescue for Shetland Sheepdogs ("Shelties"). Formed and incorporated in the State of Illinois in 1995, Secondhand Shelties is licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Secondhand Shelties helps find new homes for abandoned, orphaned, and unwanted shelties. We are not dog breeders nor are we members of any breed club. Although we receive referrals for both adoptions and owner give-ups from breeders and clubs, our rescue functions as a corporation and separate entity from any club or rescue. We do not exchange dogs with other rescues. Once a sheltie is in our program, the dog stays with us until the dog is adopted - regardless of the time it may take to find the "perfect home" for that particular dog. Our "Secondhand Shelties" come from many backgrounds. Approximately half of the shelties are given up by their owners. The other half come from animal control facilities, shelters or are found wandering the streets. Everyone involved with Secondhand Shelties volunteers their services, their homes, and their time because of their love for this breed. All foster homes are licensed to insure the best for each and every one of our dogs. Because all our shelties live in foster homes while awaiting adoption, they are able to be seen in a normal home environment. Everything medically necessary is done in order for our dogs to be in good, healthy adoptable condition prior to showing them to potential adopters, regardless of the cost. All dogs in the care of Secondhand Shelties are checked by a veterinarian upon entry into our rescue program. Vaccinations, neutering, dentals and any other needed medical procedures are done prior to adoption. Normally we have adult shelties of various ages available for adoption. On rare occasions we have dogs under 1 year of age. Because we are not breeders, we rarely have puppies. Please call for an adoption application if you'd like to open your heart and home to a wonderful, loving Secondhand Sheltie who needs you. If calling outside the 630, 708, 847 or 815 area code we will return your call collect. You can also request an application by e-mail, but be sure to include your name, home address, city/state and telephone number. Please have patience if you leave us a message or send an e-mail. All members of our rescue work full time jobs while also caring for their own pets as well as foster dogs. Because of this, we may take a day or two to return your call or e-mail.

Shannons Companions

We are very excited to announce that donations are now tax deductable!!!! We are a private rescue organizion. We do not receive any funding so adoption fees and donations are a critical part of keeping our adoption program active. The majority of our adoptable animals are puppies/dogs that have ran out of time at other shelters, abandoned litters of puppies, puppy mill rescues and surrendered animals. We also rescue horses/ponies from abusive homes, seizure by local officials and auctions. These horses are given proper health care and given both the physical and mental rehabilitation needed in order for them to be adoptable .

Shih Tzu Rescue, Adoption and Education Safehouse (S.T.R.A.E.S.)

We are an all volunteer, not for profit, no kill, humane organization established to provide shelter, care and an adoption program for abandoned and relinquished purebred Shih Tzu. We also accept orphaned small/toy breed dogs with injuries and medical ailments that are costly to treat and who would otherwise be scheduled to die providing the extraordinary medical care they need for a second chance at life and a loving home. All dogs are kept in a licensed shelter with a cageless, home-like environment and access to over two fenced-in acres where the dogs can run free. Our Shih Tzu are spayed/neutered prior to adoption, current on annual innoculations and monthly heartworm preventative and have an AVID Friendchip identification implant. Complete veterinarian checks are done on all incoming pets and any necessary special tests, medical and/or surgical procedures are provided. Each resident also receives regularly scheduled grooming care and parasite treatments. All dogs are temperament and personality tested so potential new owners can be matched with a dog that will best suit their expectations and lifestyle. Followup assistance is provided to help the Shih Tzu and new caregiver through the transition period. We provide breed specific and general educational materials for Shih Tzu owners, or potential owners, as well as consultation and training services. We will work with Shih Tzu owners considering giving up their pets, offering alternatives and education in an effort to help keep Shih Tzu in their current home.

Southern Illinois Pug Rescue--AnimalWrites

“Rescuing Pugs and other Breeds in Need SIPRAW is an all volunteer, non-profit organization founded in the spring of 2004 by someone in love with pugs, literature, art, music, theatre, and writing. (Thus the Write in AnimalWrites.) Our main purpose is to rescue pugs from puppy mills and place them in loving, permanent homes. We also rescue, care for, and place any unwanted, mistreated, or abandoned pugs. All donations and all adoption fees go solely to the rescue, care, and placement of pugs in loving, permanent homes. SIPRAW’s mission is to rescue as many pugs as possible from puppy mills, care for said pugs, including shots, spaying/neutering, dentals, and treatment for any illnesses, and find excellent homes for these pugs, to educate the public about puppy mills and how to avoid inadvertently buying a puppy from a puppy mill, to reduce pet overpopulation by increasing awareness of the need to spay/neuter, and to increase public awareness of the need for humane treatment of all animals. Our ability to rescue pugs from puppy mills as well as to accept abandoned, unwanted, or mistreated pugs is only limited by finances and available foster homes. We rely entirely on volunteers, donations, and adoption fees. You can see more at www.sipraw.com We attend the auctions which are held each week from September to June and try to outbid the puppy millers who are buying dogs from each other. Because these auctions happen so frequently if we don't have dogs now, we will have them soon. We recommend that you contact us or fill out an application and be put on the wait list. We desperately need donations to use to buy these dogs out of the cages. By law ,dogs in mills--they call themselves "large commercial kennels" or "professional dog breeders" are kept in wire-bottomed cages 24/7. These cages are only 6 inches longer and wider than the dog. By law. They use the bathroom, eat, sleep, live their entire lives in these cages. Puppy mill dogs are usually wild and sadder than you can ever imagine. It is abuse. Horrible abuse. SIPRAW buys them and rehabs them (tames them, show them love) and gets them vet care before adopting them to you. --Donation Wish List: We desperately need a pickup truck for transporting dogs from the puppy mills. Either a pickup truck or an SUV or a van.

Strays Halfway House

We are an all volunteer, registered, not-for-profit organization dedicated to rescuing stray and abandoned animals in the villages of the Northwest Suburbs. All of the monies raised by Strays Halfway House are used for the animals. There are no paid members of our organization. The animal control officers of each village bring stray and abandoned animals to a holding kennel, where they are kept for up to 7 days. During those days Strays Halfway House works in conjunction with the police in an attempt to reunite lost companion animals with their human friends.
