Greater Chicago Ferret Association Shelter

The GCFA is a Non-Profit organization with both a Ferret Shelter & Club. We are the Oldest and Largest Ferret Association in the Greater Chicago Area! In trying to come up with a mission statement that would reflect what G.C.F.A. is all about, and how the volunteer's that help us feel about what they do. I chose this short story that was written by someone who wishes to remain anonymous. An old man was walking along a beach after a particularly high and violent tide had receded, leaving thousands of starfish stranded above the waterline to die. Ahead of him he saw a youth, bending down and then standing to fling something into the waves. Coming closer, he saw the youth was tossing starfish back into the ocean where they had a chance. "Why bother?" the old man told the youth. "There are thousands here. You can't toss them all back before they die. You can't even toss a small fraction of them back in time. What you're doing doesn't matter." The youth pondered that a moment, looking at the starfish he held in his hand. "It matters to this one," he replied, and threw it back into the water. This is all that anyone can ask and/or do. If you can, help us save one more!!!

Strays Halfway House

We are an all volunteer, registered, not-for-profit organization dedicated to rescuing stray and abandoned animals in the villages of the Northwest Suburbs. All of the monies raised by Strays Halfway House are used for the animals. There are no paid members of our organization. The animal control officers of each village bring stray and abandoned animals to a holding kennel, where they are kept for up to 7 days. During those days Strays Halfway House works in conjunction with the police in an attempt to reunite lost companion animals with their human friends.

Anderson Animal Shelter

Incorporated in 1966, Anderson Animal Shelter provides temporary housing for approximately 3,400 dogs, cats, birds, gerbils, hamsters, ferrets and other homeless or abandoned pets. We are committed to a low-kill philosophy (100% adoption of adoptable animals) and so do not place time limits on any of the animals in our care. In 2001 an on-site veterinary clinic was added to provide health care for Shelter animals and to assist in the goal of spaying/neutering all adopted dogs and cats before they leave the Shelter. Our Mission: To establish Anderson Animal Shelter as a premier facility dedicated to compassionate and humane treatment of homeless companion animals through direct care, education and communithy outreach programs.

MSIR - Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue

Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue (MSIR) is a non-profit, all-volunteer corporation. MSIR seeks out, fosters, and places homeless Shiba Inu dogs into carefully screened, lifelong, and nurturing homes. In addition to rescue, MSIR volunteers provide medical care and/or rehabilitation for foster dogs and then attempt to match them with appropriate, permanent homes. MSIR also educates the public about the Shiba Inu breed, the need for dog rescue and dog training, and the importance of spaying/neutering pets to prevent overpopulation. One of MSIR's goals is to acquire funding to support operations. MSIR is based in Chicago, and currently serves parts of the Midwest. We place most of our dogs in the Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin region, but we have also successfully placed dogs in Massachusetts, Utah, and Florida.

Illinois Birddog Rescue, Inc.

Illinois Birddog Rescue, Inc. is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to saving, transporting, vetting, fostering, and adopting homeless American Field-bred English Pointers and English Setters - a group of canines commonly known as BIRDDOGS. We are funded solely from adoption fees and donations. Since our slow beginning in October of 2001, we have placed close to 200 dogs and puppies. Most of our rescue dogs are in foster care in the Chicagoland area with a wonderful group of volunteers who dedicate their free time and energy to help the dogs get ready for their forever homes. While in foster care, the rescues live in a home and are socialized with other dogs, people, children, and cat tested if possible. To assure that they will make good house pets, our rescues are also taught basic manners, are housebroken and cage trained. Unfortunately many of the rescues that come in have been abused or are in poor health. We take care of any medical issues and give these dogs lots of TLC.
