Adopt-A-Dog was started back in 1987, I found three little pups out at the in-laws place and wanted to catch them and find them good homes. One came up missing and I received a call that one little puppy was about 10 miles from where I last saw him. So I drove out there and sure enough it was the third pup and he was really thirsty and starving. So I decided then that I would try and help who I could. I did not realize what this thing would blossom into in 15 yrs.

We are a no kill animal shelter that can house up to 15 dogs and 10 cats comfortably. We placed 105 animals into new homes in 2004, pretty good for a rural area:) We strive to train each dog to pass the K9 Good Citizen test and make them better pets when they leave than they were when they came. We also help with Colorado and Nebraska pet transports!! One of our dogs even flew to Canada!! Our shelter is attached to the local veterinary hospital so each animal is examined and healthy prior to adoption

While we do not have an actual shelter here, we try to help save animals from the terrible fates that await them at the hands of many who don't care. We have several foster homes, though they are usually full, but we sometimes keep a waiting list. No promises, but please contact us to see what our resources are if you need to surrender your pet, or have found a stray. Often, we can find other rescue groups with some ideas, and we try to work with them on housing, transporting and adopting. We also take reports on abusive situations and neglect, but with no support from law enforcement, we often cannot do much - but we try.

The Friends of the Jefferson Animal Shelter is a nonprofit organization and public charity. Our mission is to assist the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter by implementing programs to provide care for animals too young to be housed at the shelter, adoption programs to decrease the number of animals that must be euthanized by the shelter, and otherwise assisting as advised of needs by the shelter directors and staff. We currently have the following programs in place: 1. Monthly Pet Adoption Days - Animals from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter are brought to offsite locations each month by our volunteers. Many people find a visit to the shelter too stressful, so offsite Pet Adoption Days provide potential adopters an alternative place to see the shelter animals. 2. Volunteers help maintain the Cat Adoption Center, known as The Purr Pad at Jefferson Feed, Pet & Garden Center, which features felines from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. 3. The Kitten Fostering Program - we began this program in April 2001 to give shelter kittens younger than six weeks old a chance to reach adoptable age by being fostered in the homes of volunteers. This minimizes their exposure to disease and provides the care and nurturing they need to become loving companions. 4. Shelter Dog Socialization - This program is brand new and provides shelter dogs with exercise, socialization, and obedience training on weekday afternoons.

The St. Charles Humane Society was formed with a Vision to establish humane treatment of animals and create an adoption and sterilization program at the St. Charles Animal Control Center in Luling.
The shelter had been built in the early 1980s for the sole purpose of picking up abandoned, stray and unwanted pets. The outcome for 98% of these animals was euthanasia. St. Charles Humane Society began recruiting residents, businesses and garnered St. Charles Parish Council support to turn the Vision into reality.
In October 1993, the Board of Directors was established with a small base of dedicated volunteers. A contract between the Parish and the Society took over a year to develop. Upon approval by the 1993 Council, the volunteers moved into an office at the shelter. The dedication of all members has led to one of the most professional and successful humane groups in Louisiana. Many unforeseen goals have been obtained since the inception of the society. A cruelty investigator was initiated within the Sheriffs Department at the request of the Society and abuse calls were finally taken seriously.
In 1996 and 2003, the St. Charles Humane Society helped implement animal ordinances to protect animals, promote responsibility for pet ownership and protect residents from dangerous animals. In 2000, a supervisor of the shelter was granted through Parish Council approval. Since that time, numerous improvements have been made to the shelter. A separate room for cats and kittens; platforms for the dogs to get off the cold concrete and stay dry and warm.
In May 2003, a surgery and exam room was created with the help of a grant from PETsMART Charities. A giant step for spaying and neutering animals before they leave the shelter and; finally, a way of taking care of all the animals at the shelter. Healthy animals slated for euthanasia are sterilized and have a second chance. Diseased animals are euthanized immediately and do not languish at the shelter. The society became a PETsMART Partner in 1999 and in 2003 the St. Charles Humane Society became the sole group for adoptions. Ten cats are available at the store every day of the week and the Society brings in dogs on the weekends.

Looziana Basset Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer effort to save abandoned and mistreated basset hounds for the love of the breed. Our rescued bassets are from shelters all over Louisiana and Mississippi, are strays whose owners cannot be found, or are relinquished by owners who no longer want them. Changing lifestyles, the economy, and lack of responsibility are some of the reasons for the abundance of abandoned basset hounds.
Looziana Basset Rescue takes the orphaned bassets into foster care, where they are loved and cared for until permanent adoptive homes can be found. We provide veterinary care that includes vaccinations, heartworm treatment if necessary, and spaying or neutering. We completely rehabilitate, both physically and emotionally, any adoptable dog and prepare him/her for a "forever home."

ANIMAL RIGHTS FOR LIFE (ARFL), a Non-Profit Organization founded in 1985 by Gloria Trelles Ripple, is dedicated to the welfare and placement of COMPANION animals. Each rescued animal by ARFL's dedicated volunteers receives a vet check, all vaccines, de-worming, de-fleaing and spay/neuter. Dogs are heartworm tested and cats are FeLV/FIV tested. Many have required medical attention, AND have not been denied, such as heartworm treatments and surgeries. We operate out of the pockets of our members and raffles that we sponsor, along with a few small donations made by some of the people who adopt our pets. ARFL's policy is that no animal should ever be killed for want of a good home. Based on this policy, many have found comfort in a forever home with a family to call their own.
