Stray from the Heart is a non-profit dog rescue organization whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and place homeless dogs with loving new families. We do so without the benefit of paid employees or a shelter to house these needy dogs up for adoption. We have a wonderful network of volunteers, such as dog walkers, trainers and foster parents to help support our efforts to rehabilitate and socialize each dog before a permanent home is found for them. We also provide follow-up support to the individuals and families who adopt a dog from us. Stray from the Heart volunteers are always available to provide advice on health and behavioral problems that may arise after an adoption. We are here to help you find the perfect canine companion and to help every dog find a perfect forever home. Even so, we have a "no questions asked" policy in cases where a dog must be returned to us. Our main concern is the health and safety of our Strays.

In the early fifties, there was no Strayhaven Animal Shelter. There was only a group of caring people, who rescued strays, keeping them in their homes until these pitiful dogs and cats were found loving homes. In 1960, this dedicated group decided it was impractical and impossible to keep all the animals in their homes, and Strayhaven Animal Shelter was built and Incorporated.
A retired gentleman by the name of Perry Dehart, donated the land and his time to build the shelter. With help from concerned citizens and some government loans, the shelter was completed. From the beginning, the shelter was, and still is, privately run. It is the only for stray dogs and cats, to shelter, inoculate, de-worm, and find good homes. Strayhaven is unique in that it keeps its strays longer than most shelters.

We are an all volunteer, registered, not-for-profit organization dedicated to rescuing stray and abandoned animals in the villages of the Northwest Suburbs. All of the monies raised by Strays Halfway House are used for the animals. There are no paid members of our organization.
The animal control officers of each village bring stray and abandoned animals to a holding kennel, where they are kept for up to 7 days. During those days Strays Halfway House works in conjunction with the police in an attempt to reunite lost companion animals with their human friends.

Street Cat Sanctuary
The Street Cat Sanctuary, Inc. has been doing rescue in our community for more than nine years. The organization was started by Debbie after she started feeding homeless cats living on the streets at fast food restaurants. Every night Debbie went out on the streets to feed these homeless cats in rain or cold. Many wonderful and the most beautiful cats adopted have come from this very situation. The cats have not asked to be dumped by an owner who no longer wanted the burden of owning a pet nor to born into that type of life; its not their fault. So she started Street Cat Sanctuary, Inc. When a little puppy came along and no one would even take him for free the cat rescue went to the dogs. The little ugly duckling turned into a beautiful swan known as Murphy and became Debbie's first dog in 27 years. She believes all cats, dogs, and other pets deserve a chance at life and to have a home of their own.
We are not accepting pets into the shelter at this time. Currently we are only matching those wishing to adopt with loving pets who need a home
