The Pepin County Humane Society has been in business for close to 30 years. We are a very small shelter with only 5 dog kennels & 8 cat kennels. Because we're so small it's very difficult to find homes for all our homeless pets. Also, because we're so small we are able to get to know the animals that cross our path VERY well.

Singing Blues: Bluetick Rescue is a small organization dedicated to saving the lives of homeless Bluetick Coonhounds in Wisconsin. Our founder has been in love with this wonderful breed for many years, and it breaks her heart that so many are homeless. The goals of Singing Blues is to help some of these dogs find loving homes and to educate the public about the joys of having coonhounds as family pets.

We do not have any paid staff, no corporate jets, Swiss bank accounts or luxury condos in foreign lands. The animals are rescued and cared for daily, by volunteers. The costs we have are specialty feeds, vet expenses, hay, straw, woodshavings, and farm supplies like water heaters, tanks, garden hoses, electric cords... nothing too fancy. What what we have seen over the last few months, is an influx of calls from people who can no longer afford to feed their animals

The Chequamegon Humane Association provides a safe, caring environment for homeless animals in the Chequamegon Bay Area. In addition, the shelter performs the valuable services of spaying, neutering, and vaccinating these animals prior to adopting them out. These services, along with daily maintenance and care add up quickly.

We're a relatively small facility usually housing ~15-20 cats and ~10 dogs. There are lots of wonderful things about our facility; two being that we tend to get a lot of smaller dogs and we almost always have kittens! Lots of the animals on our page are from private homes that have either privately rescued these animals or, due to extenuating circumstaces, can no longer keep them. We do not accept owner surrenders, but we are dedicated to trying to find all needy animals homes.

NHS was authorized as a non-profit organization in 1987. Our shelter was opened in Oct. of 1996 on an 87 acre site. It is surrounded by beautiful rolling fields that change with the seasons, making our volunteer mowed walking trails a never-ending source of pleasure. We have 16 dog runs and 30 cat runs. The building also includes an office, receiving area, visitation room, cat and dog isolation areas, indoor and outdoor play areas for cats, three outdoor exercise runs and a 100 x 100 fenced play yard for dogs. Other areas include laundry & grooming, kitchen and storage rooms.
The following page has a brief history of Northwoods Humane Society and how we got to the point we are at today. It's been a long road but a very rewarding one and hopefully we can offer some inspirations and ideas for other groups who may be just getting started.
